CORA ABIGAIL SUMMERFORD
NINETEEN | OCTOBER 28 | PUREBLOOD |
SLYTHERIN GRAD | HARPIES KEEPER | ANNA POPPLEWELL |
On the surface, Cora Summerford has had the perfect life. She was born into wealth and privilege. Her father worked closely with the Ministry and a few business associates and her mother did quite a bit of charity work. She was taught to think of herself as better than others - yes, including that pesky business with blood status... but even that was not quite so intensive a lesson as had been taught to her parents or grandparents or their friends. Every material thing that Cora wanted, she received.
But her life was not perfect. She was often somewhat neglected by her incredibly busy parents. Her older brother was the one she really counted on... however, he was three years older, so when she was eight, he began school and she had to stay - and then, later, when she was almost all grown up... he graduated Hogwarts and moved out of their family home. He is still her brother, and still one of her favorite people on the entire planet (a short list, there) but he isn't so readily available anymore. She misses him.
At Hogwarts, she became very close with a small group of girls in her dorms, and the four of them stuck together all through school and into their adult lives. Those three young women are her best friends in the world and round out her list of favorite people. It is indeed a short list, but there is reason for that. Cora doesn't really get close to other people too easily: it's hard for her. Some people call her an ice queen. Some people believe it's because she didn't get enough hugs as a child. Few know the truth - outside of her brother and best friends. Now, it may be true that Cora didn't get enough parental affection while growing up, but she didn't turn truly so cold until Hogwarts, and as always - there was a boy.
In fact, there were several boys. Cora developed a lot faster than most of her friends and began dating a year or so earlier than them. She called herself mature and thought that it made her special. And so between her third and fifth year, there were four boys. She wasn't absolutely boy-crazed, and she didn't hop from guy to guy. But there were these slightly older boys who made her feel special and adored--until they didn't. They all left her cold in the dust, usually just when Cora was really falling for them. When a heart is broken time and again, trust is difficult... and all of Cora's relationships since she turned fifteen have been - less trusting, to say the least. She expects them to leave, and so she doesn't open up, and then when they do leave? She feels almost validated, which helps with the pain of the break-up. See? She knew it. They always leave.
