TWENTY | DECEMBER 7 | HALF-BLOOD |
GRYFFINDOR GRAD | SHOP CLERK | DEMI LOVATO |
Mackenzie dela Cruz has had an incredibly interesting - and tumultuous - life. She is a middle child, in the midst of a big family. Her mother was Irish and her father was Spanish. When Kenzie was a child, she saw her baby sister whisked away and (presumably) eaten by a wild creature who was later identified to her as a werewolf. Despite that incredibly sad childhood event, Kenzie was still quite a cheerful child... she was constantly exuberant, never seeming to lose steam or flag in energy. This continued through her years at Hogwarts. Many students start to calm down in their first or second year, maybe third... but Kenzie? Kenzie was different. She didn't even begin to mellow until into her sixth year.
It was at that time that she met someone with whom she could share her endless energy, and he became her balance. Tyler Monroe was quieter and shyer than herself, and together they were like yin and yang. She fell for him really quickly, and the feeling was mutual. They both graduated the following year. However, it wasn't long before tragedy struck Kenzie's life. Her best friend died and then not two weeks later - her parents died in a terrible car accident. Despite how much Kenzie had previously bounced back from every setback in her life... these devastated the eighteen year old girl. She pushed away everyone she loved - and who loved her - and retreated into herself. Very few were able to stay close to her in this time. She even pushed away Tyler, hard enough that he left the country.
She had told them all that she was just a tragedy magnet, that she was afraid association with her would kill everyone she cared about. None of them believed her, and she knew it wasn't the truth. The truth was that Kenzie couldn't stand to be around any of them. Much as she did care for each of them, it just hurt too much to be around anyone who knew what had happened. So she turned to strangers, and crowds into which she could disappear. Kenzie ended up in a relationship with a man who she thought was good. He made her feel so much better about everything... she moved in with him after a month. That was when he become verbally and emotionally abusive. It took her a while to really see the signs - mostly with the help of the only friend who she hadn't been able to push away, though not for lack of trying - and even longer to break free.
Since then, Kenzie has been living with that friend, Astrid Longbottom, and putting her life back together. The promising job she had secured just after graduation from Hogwarts was long gone; instead, she is now a simple shop clerk at an apothecary. The work interests Kenzie - but just now, it pays the rent. Her heart is shattered, and some mornings she doesn't recognize the girl in the mirror... but things are getting better. For the first time in over a year, Kenzie is finding pieces of herself again.
